LFB VOLUNTEER DOES INCOME TAX RETURNS

One of the Langley Food Bank volunteers also does Income Tax Returns for LFB clients. For the 2008 tax year she has completed 141 income tax returns for our clients! She has received a some thank you cards from clients, and several clients have come and told us how thankful they were to have their returns done.

At the front desk, we hear time and time again a sigh of relief when they hear that someone will be able to do their tax returns. For some people completing their tax return is a very big hurdle that they (our clients) just can’t seem to deal with. Their gratitude and relief is very evident.

Langley Food Bank donated several pallets of food to Global Aid Network for shipment overseas (see March 24 2009 post). This is one example of how food from Langley impacted a family far away!

A GOOD NEWS STORY FROM ONE OF OUR (FORMER) CLIENTS!

As you serve a large population of Langley, I am sure you need to hear positive stories of how your services actually helps people get out of their desperate situation. Well, we came along a few years back and asked for help, which you have given our family every week by food donations and clothing. I am so happy to report that we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and are not only out of debts but will be able to buy our own groceries in a matter of weeks. Your help has taken the pressure off of our shoulders just long enough for us to formulate a plan to get back on our feet. The Lord has blessed us greatly and I can honestly say that things are getting better and better. I didn’t want to stay in this financial situation. I wanted out! You have helped us get there and I am very thankful for all your help. As we enter a new chapter in our lives, I would like to ask you to tell everyone in your team how much of a blessing they have all been to us. When we make our final grocery visit, I will be sure to thank you in person.

MORE FOOD GOING OVERSEAS

The Langley Food Bank has been privileged to once again donate several pallets of canned soup, macaroni and cheese, dry soup mix, noodles and bar soap as well as some toys and other miscellaneous items to Global Aid Network (GAIN) for shipment to needy communities overseas.

Thank you to all whose generous support allows us to not only give to those in need here at home but also to others in far away places.

We Have Been Praying For More Produce and

Over the past many months now the Langley Food Bank has received an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables from many different sources.

Oranges, pears, apples, grapes, plums, peaches, potatoes, corn, cucumbers. peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes, packaged salads of all descriptions, broccoli and many other varieties of produce have been donated in large quantities by local growers, home gardeners, distributors and importers.

At times it has been a challenge to find the space to store it all, especially when the product requires refrigeration!

Our clients are very appreciative of the fresh fruits and vegetables and it is so wonderful to be able to offer them fresh and healthful food on a regular basis.

Langley Food Bank hosts Annual Gift Fair

Summerfest 2008 was a fun filled not to mention busy week

Our clients get quite excited when they realize it is that time of the year again. This year our gift fair was held from July 7 to 11. Each client family was able to choose 1 gift for each member of the family plus several ‘extra’ smaller gifts including trigger sprayers, art prints and gift bags with lots of small surprises in each one!

Over the course of the week over 530 brand new gifts were given away to our clients.

The selection included items such as small appliances, framed art prints, sets of serving dishes, cutlery, frying pans, storage containers, cosmetics and bath sets, tool sets, summer toys, fans and humidifiers, luggage, and much, much more

Client’s reactions and comments are often interesting. Here are a few:

A duvet cover – perfect!
I was just thinking of how I could get a hairdryer & there it was!
I got stuff for the kids, and I got picture frames. They are so expensive.
You guys are so thoughtful! (Tears)
I got a beautiful book about B.C. – Just beautiful.
I got beautiful matching serving dishes that match the rest of my black dishes.
This is a match made in heaven.
It is my older son’s birthday & I can’t afford a gift – maybe I’ll find something for him. (And she did!)
I am so excited!
I can’t believe you guys.
I got a BBQ set.
Wow – I am so excited – I can’t believe this, I got a curling iron.
Can you believe it; I got a small ironing board with an iron.
So much fun – What a surprise!
We received several comments after distribution thanking us again via the phone and people stopping at the desk to voice their appreciation.

Carrots, carrots, carrots

We recently received a donation of 6000 lbs. of Manitoba carrots from a local produce wholesaler. These carrots were absolutely huge, but were tender and sweet, great for eating raw or for cooking. Our clients enjoyed enough carrots for several meals for their families and our kitchen used lots for for the Lighthouse cafe meals over the past several weeks!

The Langley Food Bank also donated 3000 lbs. to the Fraser Valley Gleaners to add to the wonderful soup mixes they produce and ship to third world countries for distribution to the hungry.

Doing our part for the environment

The Langley Food Bank reuses plastic grocery bags that supermarket customers return to the stores and place into the recycling bins. Our volunteers work hard to sort out all re-usable bags which we use to bag client’s grocery hampers.

We also have a considerable number of re-usable cloth bags in circulation among our clients.

Langley youth parlays $100.00 seed money into $1600.00 worth of groceries for Langley Food Bank!

The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Aldergrove has been running a program called ‘Kingdom Assignment’. The pastor had made 50 $100.00 grants available to church members which they could take and make it grow for good use in the community.

Regan took this $100.00 to Charlie Lee at the IGA Marketplace in Thunderbird Village who agreed to make the $100.00 grow with an additional $50.00 worth of groceries.

Members of Regan’s church got on the bandwagon with more support and he ended up with $1100.00 to buy groceries to which Charlie Lee added over $500.00 worth of groceries!

A warm thank you to Regan and everyone who supported his efforts to make a difference!

Langley Food Bank sends more food overseas.

Langley Food Bank recently donated several pallets of food to Canadian Food for Children who will be shipping the food to orphanages and needy communities in third world countries.

The shipment included baby food, canned soup, canned pasta as well as flour and sugar.

Thank you to all of our supporters who give so generously. Our abundance allows us to spread God’s provision here to others both locally and around the globe!
